Hartnett Hustles Back to Victory Lane

By Nathan Aldrich

Kevin Hartnett was nearly a half second per lap faster than the field in a dominant performance on Bike Night at the Penn Can Speedway. With rain throughout the afternoon drivers were presented with a lightning fast, heavy track that offered multiple line choices. Nick Mady grabbed the early lead over Brian Malcolm who had slipped under Bobby Puckett on the opening lap.

Lap two slowed the field as Brett Tonkin headed pitside with a flat. Mady elected to put Malcolm on the outside for the restart, solidly leading the way through turns 1 and 2. With 5 laps complete Malcolm worked the inside of Made, making the pass in turn 1 as Mady crossed him over and they drag raced down the backstretch. At the line Malcolm would be the new leader as the caution quickly followed. Malcolm would elect for the outside, rocketing away on the green as Brad Weaver worked Mady for second. Kevin Hartnett entered the top 5 on lap 8, beginning to pressure Creeden for the fourth spot. As the halfway point approached Hartnett, Weaver and Mady took it three wide down the frontstretch, Hartnett wrestling second from the pair. Hartnett set his sights on Malcolm, and began closing the half straightaway advantage. With the leaders beginning to work lap traffic the gap was only a car length when Bryan Batzel slowed to a stop under the flag stand. Malcolm launched first on the single file restart but Hartnett got the better jump, holding firm inside Malcolm through 1 and 2 and leading the way down the backstretch. Hartnett would lead unchallenged from there, collecting the checkers with a four second lead as Malcolm, Mady, Creeden and Weaver rounded out the top 5.

Feature winner Kevin Hartnett visited victory lane in back to back weeks, and thanked Brad Grammes for his expertise turning the wrenches. Kevin would like to thank the Grammes Family, Mike, Higfab Chassis, Penske Shocks, RPM Race Engines, Stone Ridge Realty and Brad Grammes Construction
